About Hoover » Attendance

Attendance

Students are expected to attend classes every day and to be on time.

Fact: did you know that 4.4% of Hoover students were considered chronically absent in 2024-25?  Chronically absent is defined as missing more than 10% of the school year.

Goal

Hoover’s goal is zero students absent 18 or more days this year.  Hoover’s Site Council created this goal in 2025 in an effort to reduce the number of chronically absent students.

Why is this important?  Attendance affects school funding!  California schools are funded based on Average Daily Attendance.  If you've received a robo call from the school, your child has been marked absent for the day and the school receives proportionally less funding from the state.

Tardiness

It is important that children be in school on time every day.  Children arriving after the bell must report to the office.

Best Practice: Parents who know their child will be late should contact the office by phone (650) 259-3900 or email [email protected] to avoid their child being marked absent.  Absent students reduce state funding to the school.

Appointments

Best Practice: If a student will be tardy and arrive late to school, due to an appointment, contact the office by phone (650) 259-3900 or email [email protected]. For appointments during the day, you can call at least 30 minutes before you need to pick up your child to give the staff time to have your child ready to go.

Sick

No student should be sent to school too sick to function all day in the classroom. Never send a child who has a fever. Students who become sick at school will be sent home after proper notification. If a child must be excused from physical education three or more school days, please submit a doctor’s note to the school secretary.

Please keep a student home from school if:

They have a fever.

They have vomited.

If a student has a fever, they must stay home until they are fever free for 24 hours.

Best Practice: If your child is sick, contact the office by phone (650) 259-3900 or email [email protected] and as a courtesy, send a note to their teachers too.

Vacations

Please make every effort to schedule trips and vacations over the school breaks as identified in the School Calendar. This will minimize disruption to your student’s education, your classroom teacher’s teaching plan, and maximize state funding to the school district which is determined by the Average Daily Attendance (ADA).

Best Practice: If your child(ren) must miss one or more days of school for traveling, please contact Leanne (Mrs. U) [email protected] in the office to arrange an Independent Study Plan. These plans provide an alternative form of instruction, keep students engaged in learning, and ensure students are marked present for instruction by the State of California.
