VAPA

Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) are alive at Hoover.

VISUAL ARTS

Our community embraces an integrated art program in each classroom, contributes to the PTA Art Reflections program and creates a myriad of crafts during Camp Hoover.

PERFORMING ARTS

Hoover Elementary offers a comprehensive music program for all K-5 students, and a band program for 4th and 5th grade students. Students in 4th and 5th grade who elect to participate in the band program learn how to play a particular instrument, such as the clarinet, alto sax, flute, trombone, trumpet, or percussion instruments. For more information about the 4th and 5th grade band program, please read some frequently asked questions below:

How often and how long are music lessons?
Instrumental lessons are provided once a week and given in groups based on instrument and level of proficiency.  Students are pulled out during school hours and the lessons last about 30 minutes.

Is there a cost for the lessons at Hoover?
No, you do not need to pay for instrumental lessons at Hoover.  The music program is supported through BCE.

Does my beginning level student attend morning band rehearsal?
When the band first begins rehearsing, it is mostly 5th graders who have continued their instruments from 4th grade.  4th graders are invited to join the early morning band rehearsal once the music teacher feels they are ready.

Where can I rent an instrument for my child?
There are several local music stores where you can rent an instrument for the school year.  Check the Internet or yellow pages for retailers in the Bay Area.

What book do I need to purchase for the band?
Students will be informed of the music book requirements prior to the start of the music program in the Fall.

Do I need to rent a drum set if my child is signed up for percussion?
No, you only need to buy a drum pad and sticks.  The school has drums for your student to play during their lessons and for the concert.

Is there a dress code for the Winter and Spring Concerts?
The suggested dress code for our musicians is a white top and black or dark bottoms.
